Kiln drying, moisture content and movement: what to check before you buy a slab
What moisture content a wood slab should have, how kiln drying works, how much a top will move in your climate and how to verify readings from overseas.
Wood that belongs at the heart of a home. Tell us the size, grade and finish you have in mind. We match you with up to 3 Vietnamese workshops that make Hevea slabs, butcher block and live-edge tops, and they show you the actual piece before you decide.
It comes down to the match: workshops that fit your piece, from the first quote.
Your request goes to up to 3 workshops that make Hevea slabs and butcher block regularly, picked for your grade, size and finish. Not a general directory.
Workshops in the network quote to your spec, communicate clearly and keep you updated while your order is made.
Quotes, terms and delivery are agreed between you and the workshop. Free for buyers.
No two slabs share a grain story. That is why the photo matters: ask each workshop to photograph the piece you will receive in natural light, then approve it. Below are styles you can request.
Style references. Workshops send photos of the actual slab or panel before you confirm an order.
Hevea brasiliensis, the rubber tree, produces latex for about 25 years. When it stops, the tree used to be burned. Plantations in southern Vietnam now send it to the sawmill instead. Same tree, second life.
The result is a dense, light-toned hardwood that finishes somewhere between maple and oak. It is stable when kiln dried correctly, and because the supply sits downstream of the rubber industry, the cost stays sensible for trade buyers.
| Janka hardness | about 960 lbf |
|---|---|
| Density (kiln dry) | about 610 kg/m³ |
| Moisture target | 8 to 12% |
| Origin | Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai (Vietnam) |
Typical values for kiln-dried Hevea. Ask the workshop for its measured moisture content and timber origin papers for your order.

The workshops we match you with are not sawmills. Boards arrive rough-sawn from partner mills, then go through the shop: glue-up, planing, sanding to 240 grit, hand-shaping for live edges and a finish chosen for the project.
Ask for every piece to be photographed against the same light. The image you approve should be the slab that ships, not a hero shot followed by the next one off the stack. We ask workshops to reply with photos for exactly this reason.
| Standard thickness | 26 / 38 / 50 mm |

A practical guide to buying wood slabs: slab types, grades, moisture content, photos, samples, lead times and shipping, with a checklist for your first order.
What rubberwood countertops are, how Hevea compares with maple, oak and walnut for hardness, colour and stability, plus the pros and cons to weigh first.
Vietnamese Hevea workshops usually offer three grades: Grade A (clear, minimal knots), Grade B (small knots, light colour variation) and Grade C (rustic, natural character). Ask the matched workshop to photograph pieces in the grade you want and to send finished samples before a bulk order.
Yes. Most workshops courier finished samples of about 200 x 200 x 40 mm by DHL or FedEx, and a sample set typically arrives in 5 to 8 business days. Ask each workshop whether the sample fee is credited against your first order.
Standard finishes are raw sanded, hardwax oil, a food-safe mineral oil blend, matte polyurethane and custom stain matching. Live-edge slabs can also be epoxy-stabilized to fill cracks and voids. Tell us where the top will be used and the workshop will recommend a finish.
It depends on the workshop and the product. Butcher block countertops are often priced by the 20ft container, roughly 80 to 120 pieces depending on size. Live-edge slabs and custom pieces often have no minimum and ship in mixed pallets.
Nothing for buyers. You send a request, we match you with up to 3 workshops and they reply to you directly with photos and a quote. We take no fee on the order, so the price you see is the workshop price.
Interior designers, architects and fabricators are welcome, and repeat projects are easier once a workshop knows your standards. Payment terms, trade pricing and lead-time priority are agreed directly between you and the workshop, not by SlabHome.
We reply within 24 business hours with matched workshops, questions or an honest note if we cannot find a good fit. Workshops then send you photos, sample options and a quote.
Join the workshop network and receive requests from designers, architects and homeowners abroad who already know the size, grade and finish they want. Timber, finish, kiln, machine and crating vendors that serve these workshops can register too.
